It's Halloween, and law enforcement agencies on both sides of the lake will be keeping close watch on registered sex offenders, as lots of little ghosts and goblins will be out tonight trick or treating.
"We encourage our parents to do a little legwork before they go out trick or treating. Go to our website, they can get locations of all the registered sex offenders in whichever community they may choose to trick or treat in," says St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Jack Strain.
Strain says sex offenders are prohibited by state law from distributing candy to juveniles and wearing costumes or concealing their identity in any way on Halloween.
The sheriff says the parish's 285 sex offenders have all been instructed to darken their front lights tonight and refrain from decorating their residences in order not to attract the attention of trick or treaters.
On the southshore, personal violence detectives and patrol officers with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office will be out tonight to ensure that sex offenders in the parish are abiding by the laws pertaining to them during Halloween. Any found in violation will be arrested.
Both departments will have additional officers out on patrol tonight for added security.
